The Public History Graduate Certificate Program at Georgia Southern

The Department of History at Georgia Southern University is now offering a graduate certificate in public history.  Public history is a growing field that focuses on the practical application of academic knowledge through museums, federal and state historic sites, media productions, the Internet, popular publishing, and other public venues. This program provides students interested in history with an alternative career path beyond traditional teaching by preparing students for work in historic preservation, oral history, historic site interpretation, museums, and archives management.

The Public History Graduate Certificate Program combines traditional historical study with training in a variety of history-related professions. The curriculum takes full advantage of established scholars in the Department of History, experienced professionals on campus and across the region, and cooperating institutions throughout Georgia.

Within a 100 mile radius of Statesboro there are a number of history museums, state and national parks, archives, and historic sites. Assisting on campus are the Georgia Southern University Museum and Henderson Library, which are helping to train students in museology, archives, and new media. We have further relationships with a number of museums and historic sites in Statesboro, Savannah, and St. Simons Island allowing our students the opportunity to develop internships and projects in a number of historical fields. In addition, the department is developing a major oral history project as well as new media initiatives with the Peace Officers Association of Georgia and the Willow Hill Heritage and renaissance Center.
