The 2017 Harbuck Scholarship Award Reading and Reception were held Friday, October 13, at 7 p.m. in IT 1005.

Final judge Carolyn Leavitt chose Kenneth Lee as the winner of this year’s Harbuck Scholarship Award. Blakelee Bartee and Alasia Dart were named finalists. The Harbuck Committee, consisting of Professors Christina Olson, Jared Yates Sexton, and Laura Valeri, stated that the entries showcased an amazing range of talents.

The Harbuck Scholarship honors Ally Harbuck, a free-spirited creative writing major from Savannah who died in a traffic accident in 2005 at the age of nineteen, one week before the end of her freshman year at Georgia Southern.  She wrote for The George-Anne and was active in the Gay-Straight Alliance and the National Organization for Women on campus.  Her parents, Debi and David Harbuck of Savannah, raised the funds to endow the scholarship.

Submissions for the 2018 Harbuck Scholarship Award will be open in April 2018.
