WGSS Program Responds to Parkland, FL Shooting
The faculty and staff at Georgia Southern University’s Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program express our deepest condolences to the students, teachers, parents, and all others affected by the recent act of violence in Parkland, Florida.
Seventeen lives were lost on Valentine’s Day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in what is now the United States’ eighteenth school shooting of 2018.
The perpetrator, a 19 year old former student, has since allegedly been tied to white nationalist, paramilitary group Republic of Florida. With senseless killing, he tried to break the spirit of these young people, their families, the community, and the country.
The surviving students have proven to be outspoken, intelligent, valuable citizens; they have taken this tragic event and mobilized themselves to advocate for change in the policies and culture surrounding gun violence.
Georgia Southern’s WGSS Program supports the University’s mission by fostering research, teaching, and outreach activities that promote integrity, civility, kindness, and collaboration. As such, we are heartbroken and enraged that such egregious violence continues to plague institutions meant to facilitate learning and growth.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, may we all try to be more understanding, compassionate, and respectful, and let us take progressive action to hold our representatives accountable for the safety of our nation.
