My research and writing interests are in African American literature. I am particularly interested in the literature of the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras, 1870-1920. I’ve published three novels for middle grades and high school readers. All deal with African American characters and the challenges of being black in the 1920s, the 1940s, and the 1890s. I’ve just completed a new novel set in Selma, Alabama, during the 1965 voting rights marches. This new novel, titled How I Made it Over, has been sent to Clarion Books for editorial review and (I hope) acceptance for publication. |
