About Dr. Pinilla-Herrera

Ángela Pinilla-Herrera completed a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in 2012.  She received an M.A. from Arizona State University and a B.A. from Universidad de Los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia.  In 2012, she joined the faculty of the Foreign Languages Department, where she enjoys teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in applied linguistics, Hispanic culture, and Spanish language.

Dr. Pinilla-Herrera’s current research focuses on how contextual and situational factors shape the linguistic behavior of heritage speakers of Spanish in the United States.  Her quantitative and qualitative research encompasses family composition and relationships, linguistic attitudes, and social networks.  In addition to her research in sociolinguistics, Professor Pinilla-Herrera has conducted studies in Spanish pragmatics and discourse analysis in the Colombian and Puerto Rican contexts.

Professor Pinilla-Herrera’s projects include the creation of the Spanish Grammar Strategies Website in collaboration with Dr. Andrew D. Cohen.  This online resource showcases audio and video clips, diagrams, mental maps, charts, visual schemes, and drawings that offer strategies for learning specific grammar forms. It also offers language learning tools directed at different learning style preferences that can be applied to various grammar forms.  The website can be accessed at http://www.carla.umn.edu/strategies/sp_grammar/
