Events and Outreach

The boards in IAB in the seating area at the second floor landing and along the wall between classrooms 2031 and 2029 will feature language and culture-related displays. These rotating exhibits promote the diversity of our cultures and of our FL programs. Stop by occasionally and take a look. Suggestions are welcomed! Here is an example (Chinese New Year):

Looking for good reads, perhaps in a foreign language? Grab a free book (or two or more…) off the book case outside the Department of World Languages and Cultures’ Library (2034 IAB, second floor; there is another shelf on the third floor, in the corner towards Lakeside). There may be other items such as posters, maps etc. as well. If you see something that interests you on the shelves inside the library try negotiating with the Department Chair or the Administrative Coordinator, you might be able get it too… Check back regularly as the selection will keep changing. Conversely, if you have foreign language and culture type items you want to put up for adoption let us know.

The annual World Book Day is celebrated on April 23. To mark the occasion, the Department of World Languages and Cultures offers a reading–virtual or in person–around that time (possibly even on several days). Students, faculty, and staff who are interested in participating may read or recite (or sing?) a short poem, a song, a short story, a fragment of a novel or essay, or something along these lines in the language they are learning or teaching. It would also be nice if readers explain briefly why they have chosen what they are reading. Contributions should not last longer than about five minutes (rehearsing beforehand is strongly recommended…). Further details will be made available closer to the event.

“Collab”, the World Languages Collaborative (WLC), organizes events and activities for foreign language professionals primarily in the counties surrounding the cities where Georgia Southern has campuses. It is lead by a steering committee whose current members are:
