B.A. in World Languages and Cultures
Concentrations and minors in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish Studies.
World Languages and Cultures is a great major to prepare you to work and interact with people cross-culturally and internationally in business, government, education, and more. In fact, mastery of a non-English language will enhance your work and service opportunities throughout your life in whatever you may pursue. By choosing to major in World Languages and Cultures, you are joining scores of other students who are increasing their understanding of cultures and peoples, and improving their communication skills in one of the languages that we offer.
World Languages and Cultures at Georgia Southern gives you the opportunity to become involved in world language clubs, to participate in language-related community service, and to choose from an array of study abroad programs. Your professors will involve you in local world-language culture excursions, and you will have the opportunity to develop your analytical skills, both verbally and in writing, through faculty-supported creative and research projects. As you excel in your major, you will be invited to join a World Language Honor Society, to participate in an internship, to serve in the department’s tutoring program, or to act as a leader in a variety of world-language-related organizations.
DISCONTINUATION OF LATIN AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN
We are sad to say that Professor Eisenhart retired in May 2021 and that study in Latin will no longer be an option at Georgia Southern in the future.
If you have already taken a Latin course at Georgia Southern and need to complete your language sequence or your Latin minor or concentration, we have a teach-out plan to meet your needs. Dr. Eric Kartchner can advise you in the process (your academic advisor is also prepared to help you). Please reach out to Dr. Kartchner or to your academic advisor with any questions you may have about Latin. Gratias!
If you find information about the Latin Concentration or Latin Minor in this site or in the Georgia Southern University’s page, please be aware that we are working on removing outdated information about these programs.
M.A. and MAT in Spanish
If you have completed your undergraduate degree, can speak Spanish, and are looking to expand your employment options, our Spanish graduate degrees may be what will satisfy your need.
- Our M.A. in Spanish program hones students’ ability to think critically and deal effectively and with appropriate cultural awareness in the Spanish-speaking world.
- Our M.A.T. in Spanish prepares students to teach Spanish in schools K-12. There is an enormous demand and certified teachers easily find secure jobs. For more information, please visit M.A.T. Spanish Education Grades P-12.
Many students choose to complete both the M.A. and the MAT simultaneously. The programs work together seamlessly and afford students broader preparation and expanded employment opportunities.
We’d love to have you join our ranks! To enter our program you need to have an undergraduate degree (in any field) and feel comfortable speaking and writing Spanish (we’ll evaluate your abilities for free to see if you are ready).
¡Hasta pronto!
The Department of World Languages and Cultures provides you with an exciting learning environment, with state-of-the-art classrooms, and with thriving undergraduate and graduate academic programs. We hope you will join us!
