In Memoriam

 

Professor George A. Rogers died in Savannah, Georgia on August 14, 2010. Born in Quincy, Illinois on August 7, 1918, he received his B.A. from Illinois College in 1940. With the entry of America in World War II, Rogers served with distinction in the U.S. Army in Europe. Upon being discharged in 1946, he entered graduate school at the University of Illinois, which awarded him a doctorate in European history in 1950. That year he came to what was then Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro. For the next thirty-three years, he taught many different courses in European history and witnessed the tremendous growth of the history department. Much of that expansion resulted in what is now Georgia Southern University, especially in Modern European history, was due to Dr. Rogers. After his retirement in 1983, he kept active, co-authoring a book and articles with his colleague, R. Frank Saunders. He was a most kind and genial gentleman, and also a dedicated teacher and scholar. He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-six years, Betty Adams Rogers. His family has graciously requested that memorials be made to the George A. Rogers Scholarship Fund in the History Department at Georgia Southern University.
