“Tanks, Smartphones, and People: The July 15 Failed Coup and the Future of Democracy in Turkey”
Ahmet Akturk, Assistant Professor, History Department, Georgia Southern University
An unsuccessful coup attempt shook Turkey on the night of July 15, 2016. Ahmet Akturk, a professor of history at Georgia Southern, happened to be in Istanbul on that historic night. In this lecture, he will talk about his personal observations and situate the failed coup in the context of modern Turkish history–a country that has experienced multiple coups since 1960. He will also talk about the future of democracy and pluralism in Turkey, an issue of concern for many, both in the country and the wider world.
