Each semester, we sponsor a variety of film screenings, lectures, and readings. The items listed below are our regular events. However, be sure to follow us on social media for additional events.
Burning Swamp

The Department of English Presents
Throughout the academic year, we host visiting scholars, published writers, or conversations with alumni. We’ve had Pulitzer Prize-winning writers Andrew Sean Greer and Jericho Brown, New York Times Best-Selling author Stacy Willingham, Harvard University’s Nasir Jones, Hip Hop Fellow Dr. Regina N. Bradley, and many others.
Fledge Award Reading
Students selected to have their work published in fledge, as well as the winners of our high school writing contest, will read from their pieces at an award ceremony. This event is held once a year in April. Learn more about fledge, the journal of outstanding first-year writing.
Georgia Poetry Circuit
The Georgia Poetry Circuit is a consortium of ten Georgia colleges and universities working together to bring three poets of national and international reputation annually to all members’ campuses, providing important access to the literary arts for Georgia residents across the state. At each school, each Circuit poet gives a free and open reading of their work. Poets visit our campus every November, February, and April. Preparing for Graduate School
Are you preparing for graduate school? Do you have questions about the process? Well, this event is just for you! Preparing for Graduate School is an informational Q&A with Dr. Lindsey Chappell, the Director of Graduate Studies in English. This event is typically held every September.
So, you want to be an English Major?
Are you interested in joining our department as an English major or minor? Do you have questions about what to expect? This event is just for you! Our undergraduate student organization, Sigma Tau Delta, prepares questions to ask a panel of our current English students about what to expect as an English major or minor. The informal discussion is followed by a lively Q&A session.
Talking Internships: Professional Development Workshop
Are you curious about internships? Do you have questions? Well, this event is just for you!” Talking Internships” is an informational Q&A with Professor Mroczek. The event will feature a brief overview of the internship process, information about internship opportunities for college credit, and an extended Q&A. This event is typically held every November on Zoom.
What to Expect in Graduate School

Celebrate Together
Typically held on the third Thursday of October on the Armstrong campus, Celebrate Together is a festival of departmental and student organizations. There is entertainment, free food, and giveaways. Come find us at our table and Celebrate with us!
Fall into English: Meet and Greet
Typically held in October, the “Fall into English: Meet and Greet” is precisely what it sounds like: an opportunity to socialize with your professors beyond the classroom and office hours. Snacks, free books, and chill conversations await.
Celebrations of Success
Every April, we like to congratulate our graduates, scholarship recipients, and Department of English Award winners. Attend the festivities on either the Armstrong or Statesboro campus!
Social Media Contests
Want to participate in our social media contests? Be sure to follow us!
We host slogan contests for the Department every couple of years, and we have mini writing contests–like Spooky Stories and Valentine’s Day contests.
