Conversation Partner Program sponsored by the English Language Program

This special program pairs non-native English-speaking students with native English-speaking members of the University faculty, staff, and students for one-on-one, informal conversation in English. The program promotes and encourages cultural awareness and understanding, helps international students understand and adapt to U.S. culture, and provides both participants the opportunity to see the world from another perspective and create a rewarding new friendship.

Information for ELP students

The Conversation Partner Program is a great way for you to make an American friend and improve your English conversation skills.  The program will match you university students who speak English fluently. You will meet with your partner for 1 hour each week. By speaking with native English speakers you will:

  • Increase your daily vocabulary
  • Share your culture with others
  • Learn common expressions
  • Practice pronunciation
  • Learn about American culture
  • Make new friends

If you are a current ELP student and would like to participate in the ELP Conversation Partner Program, please e-mail the English Language Program at elp@georgiasouthern.edu.

Interested in being a conversation partner with an ELP student?

The ELP Conversation Partner Program is an opportunity for Georgia Southern students to meet an international student and assist them with practicing their English.  By volunteering your time you will help them reach their goals and could possibly be their first American friend.

By meeting with an international student you will:

  • Learn about a new country and culture
  • Help an English language student build their confidence in speaking English
  • Fulfill service hours for certain classes and programs

If you are a current Georgia Southern University student, staff, or faculty and would like to participate in the ELP Conversation Partner Program, email us at elp@georgiasouthern.edu
