Local and national holidays and celebrations
Did you know Georgia Southern University host’s students from 88 nations? As you gain familiarity with the Georgia Southern campus you will notice an array of cultures and traditions widely celebrated throughout the year.
So here is a list of upcoming local and national holidays and celebrations you can partake in this fall.
Homecoming Week: October 12-17
Homecoming week is filled with spirited events and memorable moments on and off campus. Thousands of Georgia Southern alumni, current students and community members unite for the Homecoming football game, social events and parade. This year’s theme is “Las Southern” inspired by Las Vegas. Visit the University Programming Board webpage for the Homecoming events calendar.
Halloween: October 31st
A holiday celebrated in the U.S where people dress in costumes, and children travel from house to house in order to ask for treats such as candy with the phrase “Trick or treat!” Many Georgia Southern students hang out with friends, watch scary movies, attend costume parties or carve pumpkins.
Veterans day: November 11th

Veterans Day is an official United States federal holiday honoring people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. People honor veterans by hosting parades, social events and memorials for remembrance.
International Festival: November 14th
Enjoy the 10th annual International Festival hosted by the Center for International Studies, local and campus sponsors. Shop at the world craft bazaar where you can purchase unique items from Haiti, Ghana, China, Taiwan, Korea, Trinidad and the Philippines. Try foods and desserts from all over the world while enjoying International music and dance performances. The festival is a wonderful opportunity to meet people from all over the world and celebrate culture!

Thanksgiving: November 26th

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Family and friends gather together and share what they are thankful for, they cook a thanksgiving meal, and many families volunteer at local soup kitchens or donate food to their local food bank.
Christmas and holiday season: December
Family and friends enjoy the holiday season by sharing gifts, cooking holiday foods, singing Christmas carols along with other festive activities. Christmas day is an annual religious and cultural celebration commemorating the birth of Christ. Many attend church service, or mass to celebrate.
