B.S. in Multimedia Journalism

Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Journalism
Format: In person on the Statesboro Campus
Credit Hours: 124

The Multimedia Journalism (formerly Multimedia Information) program provides knowledge of the evolving issues that journalists must cover in society. The program includes newspapers, specialty publications, magazines, online publications. The Multimedia Journalism core curriculum is strongly grounded in the Liberal Arts, while the major courses provide students a balance of the practical and theoretical aspects of the discipline. The curriculum has been modified to reflect the growing trend within the media industry toward convergence. Students will be prepared to deliver information across diverse platforms.

Multimedia Journalism students are encouraged to pursue their interests as paid staff members with The George-Anne newspaper and The Southern Reflector magazine, where they write, edit, and manage publications on a daily basis. Students are also encouraged to apply for internships to gain professional experience.

In fall 2019, the Georgia Southern Department of Communication Arts received an “A” grade for its commitment to providing its students with coursework in mass communication history from the American Journalism Historians Association. In a just-completed national study of more than 200 colleges and universities – conducted by the American Journalism Historians Association – Communication Arts has been named one of the top schools in the nation for educating its students in Journalism and Multimedia Film and Production in the comprehension of the historic foundations of their areas of study. At a time when some communication schools no longer provide students with a course in media history, Communication Arts believes it is critical for students to comprehend the basis on which current media practices are grounded in historic precedence. Georgia Southern Communication Arts joins such noteworthy universities as Northwestern, Michigan State and Missouri in achieving its ranking of excellence.
