Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art announces ‘Juried 2019’ winners

STATESBORO, Ga.—The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art (BFSDoArt) at Georgia Southern University recently presented its annual undergraduate juried exhibition from April 5 to 12 at the Center for Art & Theatre on the Statesboro Campus.
Juried 2019 featured the variety of media taught within the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art, which includes drawing, painting, jewelry, multimedia, mixed media, photography, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. The exhibition was juried by Susan Laney, is the owner and director of the Laney Contemporary Gallery in Savannah, Georgia. Laney has been active in the art scene for well over a decade and has worked with some of the region’s most important contemporary artists, as well as with galleries and artists nationwide. In addition to her gallery, she frequently curates exhibitions for a number of museums and art fairs.
Winners were announced at the closing reception on April 5. Nina Samuels was awarded Best in Show. Taylor Goody was awarded Juror’s Choice. Aminatta Mbow was awarded Exceptional 2D, and Andrew Shirah was awarded Exceptional 3D.

Senior Graphic Design students unveil portfolios at Center for Art & Theatre
The Georgia Southern University Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art (BFSDoArt) will host “Thirty Pixels,” an annual exhibition of senior graphic design work, from April 19 – 26 in the Contemporary and University Galleries at the Center for Art and Theatre on the Statesboro Campus. A reception will be held on Friday, April 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
The Graphic Design program at the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art is comprised of a dynamic and multi-faceted curriculum that is led by their exceptional faculty. Every year, The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art graduates, many gifted and diverse designers that successfully transition into various careers within the design profession.
“This exhibition is always one of our more intensive and exciting shows every year,” says gallery director Jason Hoelscher. “The work of our graphic design students here–or more accurately, emerging designers–is dynamic and focused, and this exhibition offers a great hint at their works to come.”

STATESBORO, Ga.—The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art (BFSDoArt) at Georgia Southern University recently presented its annual Form and Content student exhibition April 5 to 12 at the Center for Art & Theatre on the Statesboro Campus.
Form & Content features student work from Art Foundations classes that include Drawing I, Drawing II, 2D Art and Design Foundations, 3D Art and Design Foundations, and Digital Foundations. The exhibition was juried by Ben Tollefson is a nationally-exhibited artist and an assistant curator at the SCAD Museum of Art. Tollefson has been working with both 2D and 3D art, his practice is highly realistically rendered, chromatically complex and tightly composed, yet evocative and surreal in appearance.
Winners were announced at the closing reception on April 5. Haley Wilson was awarded first place. Peyton Butts was awarded second place. Genevieve Townsend was awarded third place.

Georgia Southern master’s student creates thesis exhibition by rolling the dice
Turning fantasy into reality, Georgia Southern University MFA candidate Zak Kelley used Dungeons and Dragons to help shape his thesis exhibition titled “Neo_Fluxus and Dragons.” His work will be on view from March 25 to April 1 at the Center for Art and Theatre’s University Gallery on the Statesboro Campus, with a reception to be held on March 29 from 5 to 7 p.m.
“Dungeons and Dragons has only one main rule: specific over general,” Kelley said. “I use this game mechanic to create rules for my artworks.”
Like determining the outcome of an event in Dungeons and Dragons, Kelley rolls the dice to determine the outcome of his artwork. How the dice fall determines what shapes, colors, and type of medium and materials he will use.
“The formula is vague enough to allow for interpretations of the rules, and this allows for me to create dynamic compositions out of the specific, chance-induced ruleset,” Kelley said.
With his installation, Kelley has created an experience for gallery guests — some of it scripted, some of it not — where their experiential choices are as driven by chance as his compositional choices. By combining the passive Fluxus style and audience participation with the story-telling aspect of Dungeons and Dragons, Kelley’s work explores how the viewer participates in an art experience.
