William Daniels brings textile exhibit to Georgia Southern Statesboro Campus

Fall brings cooler weather, so the University Gallery at the Center for Art and Theatre on the Georgia Southern University Statesboro Campus is bringing out the quilts.

William Daniels’ textile exhibit “On Pins and Needles” will be on view from Sept. 24 to Oct. 26, and an artist talk will begin Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. in Arts Building, room 2071. A reception will follow at the Center for Art and Theatre from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Jason Hoelscher, gallery director for the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art, said Daniels brings a unique mix of cultures and techniques to his work.

“Daniels works at an intense and interesting intersection of different cultural forces,” Hoelscher said. “Combining materials and ideas ranging from traditional quiltmaking and embroidery to folklore, urban music scenes and more, Daniels forces these elements to operate in the same space, revealing powerful areas of overlap and difference.”

Daniels is a multidisciplinary artist who works primarily in textiles, combining the contemporary and the archaic. His fine art quilts and accessories feature traditional quilt blocking and paper piecing techniques, which he combines with nontraditional components and materials.

Daniels derives inspiration from anthropology and urban art practices that confront contemporary issues and is always experimenting to integrate modern archetypes with historical, societal or spiritual topics.
