Georgia Southern Department of Foreign Languages to host annual SouthEast Coastal Conference on Languages and Literatures this April
The Department of Foreign Languages at Georgia Southern University will host its 15th Annual Southeast Coastal Conference on Languages and Literatures (SECCLL) April 5–6, at the Coastal Georgia Center at 305 Fahm St., Savannah, Georgia.
The conference, sponsored by Pearson and Vista Higher Learning, provides language and literature scholars, researchers and graduate students from the region and beyond a platform for rigorous and productive exchange among academics. SECCLL covers a broad range of topics in Arabic, French, German, Spanish, Hispanic linguistics, classics and comparative literature, East Asian/Chinese and special topics in languages, literature, culture, pedagogy and film.
Terrell A. Morgan, Ph.D., will serve as this year’s keynote speaker, delivering his presentation, “Bad Grammar: Language Research and Teaching in the Age of Fake News.” Morgan is the founder and director of the Summer Seminars Abroad for Spanish Teachers, a program that has introduced educators from K-12 to university levels to both Hispanic linguistics and less-commonly taught languages through immersion contexts on three continents since 1991. He is also the director of the Ohio Hispanic Heritage Project, and has served as the director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Ohio State University since 2015.
“From the start, it was clear that we were reaching scholars far and wide from all corners in the U.S. as well as presenters from international institutions of higher education,” said Associate Professor of Spanish and SECCLL Chair Jorge W. Suazo, Ph.D. “On a given year, we have had presenters from countries such as Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, India and Switzerland. For this reason, I say SECCLL has become an important outlet for colleagues from the U.S. and abroad to present their research on a variety of topics in connection to foreign languages.”
Participants from both public and private institutions of higher education are encouraged to attend SECCLL. Registration includes the Welcome Reception on Thursday, April 5, as well as the Keynote Banquet Luncheon on Friday, April 6.
