‘William Willis: Paintings and Drawings’ on display In Contemporary Gallery
The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art presents William Willis: Paintings and Drawings from October 4 through November 8 in the Contemporary Gallery at Georgia Southern University’s Center for Art & Theatre. The exhibition includes an artist lecture Thursday, November 5, at 5 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building, Room 2071, followed immediately by an artist reception in the gallery. The events are free, and the public is welcome.
William Willis: Paintings and Drawings explore the artist’s ongoing relationship to both individual and universal experiences. Often focusing on correlations between the natural and metaphysical world, Willis creates timeless artworks that balance sensitive brushwork with a bold handling of paint. Heavily influenced by landscape, Willis transforms common shapes and forms to reflect a myriad of cultures.
“We are thrilled to show the paintings and drawings of internationally renowned artist William Willis,” said Marc Mitchell, gallery director for the Department. “In a society that embraces a constant influx of images, Willis’ paintings are a welcomed reprieve. Each image is carefully constructed using a process that champions both intuitive and revisionary marks. The result is paintings and drawings that demand attention, but also have a sense of calm.”
Willis’ work has been shown at institutions such as the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.; Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.; Baltimore Museum of Art; Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, N.C.; Tuscon Museum of Art; Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Mass.; Yale University Art Gallery and many others.
Willis is represented by Howard Scott Gallery in New York City and Hemphill Fine Arts in Washington D.C.
