CLASS Alumni Connection Lecture Series launches Sept. 17

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Georgia Southern University presents its inaugural CLASS Alumni Connection Lecture on Monday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Russell Union Ballroom. The first of the biannual lecture series will feature Teah Weiss, an honor graduate of 1990 and the director for development for the School of Music at the University of South Carolina.

Weiss majored in French and German and minored in Theater at Georgia Southern, where she also took full advantage of Study Abroad, spending two separate semesters in France and one in Germany. She was among 12 Georgia Southern students selected to participate in the University’s President’s Leadership Initiative, and was active in Theatre South, playing the lead role in a variety of productions, including Alice in Wonderland, Grease, and Spring Awakenings

Since graduation, Weiss’ career has included work as a professional actress, a position teaching English in rural France, and several positions in international business. For the past several years, Weiss has worked in higher education development, where she is responsible for raising major gifts. Weiss travels across the country to meet with alumni and friends of the University of South Carolina and helps them match their philanthropic desires with the school’s mission.

Weiss’ prior international business career included positions with Efficient Collaborative Retail Marketing, Tetra-Pak and BHP Petroleum. These positions took her to Italy, Sweden, Monaco and France, and her work ranged from briefing corporate leaders on congressional hearings, to organizing international sales conferences, to working one-on-one with executives from major international corporations.

Weiss says she is proud to be a graduate of CLASS and Georgia Southern, and credits her success to the education she received from professors such as Dr. Clara Krug, Dr. Jean-Paul Carton, Frau Monika Lynch and Alex Chrestopoulos.

“My liberal arts and social sciences education at Georgia Southern, and especially my study abroad experiences, helped make me a better world citizen. GSU opened doors for me both professionally and personally and for that I am forever grateful,” she said.

The CLASS Alumni Connection Lecture Series aims to inform students about the value of a liberal arts education, as a major and/or a minor. During her time on campus Monday, Weiss will visit individual classes and talk to students individually. Representatives from Study Abroad, the Department of Foreign Languages and Theatre South will also talk briefly during the Sept. 17 lecture, and students will be able to ask questions at the end. The lecture is free and should last about an hour.
