BIS to MAT in Special Education


Beginning Fall 2024 the BIS major [including the BIS to MAT in Special Education] will undergo updates to provide a more efficient pathway to graduation for all students. Consult with your Academic Advisor for more opportunities.

The BIS to MAT Special Education pathway provides students interested in teacher certification in Special Education and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Special Education a path to reach these goals in a fully online program.  Students will earn a BIS degree, and during that program will apply to the MAT program in Special Education.  The BIS to MAT Special Education pathway requires 2 specific concentrations and one specific minor [shown below] in order to prepare students with the necessary hours for certification as well as completing necessary courses for the Masters program.

The GS CORE, IDS2111 and IDS4111 and other relevant BIS requirements must be met [GPA in concentrations and minor, etc. – see GS catalog]

Students in the BIS to MAT Special Education Pathway MUST choose both of the following concentrations in order to complete the pathway and be eligible to apply for the Masters in Teaching Special Education program.

  • English Language Arts Concentration
  • Human Development and Learning Concentration

Students in the BIS to MAT Special Education Pathway MUST choose the following Minor in order to complete the pathway and be eligible to apply for the Masters in Teaching Special Education program.

  • Instructional Design and Technology Minor

Students MUST complete the following graduate-level courses [which may be in the required concentrations or as electives] in order to complete the pathway and be eligible to apply for the Masters in Teaching Special Education program:

Required Concentrations


English Language Arts Concentration

The concentration in English Language Arts requires a total of 18 credit hours. Students are required to complete 6 upper division READ and ENGL courses.

READ 7131 is REQUIRED for students to complete the BIS to MAT in Special Education pathway.

Students may then select five courses for which the prerequisites have been met from the list of courses approved for the concentration.  

For students in the BIS to MAT in Special Education pathway this is a concentration that is required to successfully complete the pathway.

This concentration is ONLY available for students who have their major the Online Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies and are in the BIS to MAT in Special Education pathway.

English Language Arts Concentration Required Courses


READ 7131 is REQUIRED for students to complete the BIS to MAT in Special Education pathway and to complete this concentration.

READ 7131 Approaches to Literacy Instruction

Choose 15 hours from the following courses:

ENGL 3230 Business Writing
ENGL 3520 Revision, Grammar and Culture
ENGL 4131 Teaching Writing
ENGL 5255 Technical and Professional Editing
ENGL 5320 History of the English Language
READ 3231 Early Language and Literacy Development
READ 4233 Literacy Assessment and Instruction

Please pay careful attention to the pre-requisites that may be required for any of the courses as listed in the Georgia Southern catalog or in the Course schedule.


Human Development and Learning Concentration

The concentration in Human Development and Learning requires a total of 18 credit hours. Students are required to complete a combination of 6 specific upper division HDFS, SPED, SOCI, and EDUF courses .

Select six courses for which the prerequisites have been met from the list of courses approved for the concentration.

For students in the BIS to MAT in Special Education pathway this is a concentration that is required to successfully complete the pathway.

This concentration is ONLY available for students who have their major the Online Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies and are in the BIS to MAT in Special Education pathway.

For students in the BIS to MAT in Special Education pathway this is a minor that is required to successfully complete the pathway.
