Visiting artist Andrea Caretto’s exhibit ‘Repetitions and Imperfections’ on display at Center for Art & Theatre on Statesboro Campus

“Repetitions and Imperfections,” the striking, new art showcase from Andrea Caretto is on display through Nov. 12 in the University Gallery located in the Center for Art & Theatre on the Statesboro Campus.
Caretto will be on campus for an artist talk and reception on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m., with the talk beginning at 5:15 p.m.
“Repetitions & Imperfections” immerses the viewer into Caretto’s world, in which she uses encaustic, a form of paint mixed with wax that is applied to a canvas in a molten state. This creates lush paintings that incorporate patterns and fluid expressions, which balances the rigid and geometric with the tactile and sensuous. The artworks pop off the wall with bold color combinations and seemingly fluid, dripping surfaces that tingle the emotions as much as the eye.
“I’ve looked forward to this exhibition for years now,” said gallery director Jason Hoelscher, Ph.D. “Caretto is one of the art world’s overlooked gems, an artists’ artist whose work deserves wider visibility, and I am proud that we are able to bring her and her work to the Georgia Southern University galleries. The paintings are engaging across the spectrum, ranging from their complication of the historical and discursive legacies of abstract painting, their entangling of the sometimes-fraught relations between art and craft, and the fact that their combination of sheer over-the-top density and painterly juiciness makes it hard to look away.”
