Paradise by Emmitt Smith

The Memorial Union Gallery at North Dakota State University recently purchased an installation by Georgia Southern University alumni and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts MFA candidate Emmitt Smith. Smith’s installation “Paradise” has been included in the Student Art Collection at the Memorial Union Gallery. The Student Art Collection contains an extensive selection of contemporary art collected over the last 50 years including Jasper Johns, Judy Chicago, Andy Warhol and Frank Stella.

Each year, the Memorial Union Advisory Board, comprised of appointed community and university members choose one work to purchase. This year’s selection highlight’s the Gallery’s interest in growing multi-media installation work that represents the discussions occurring in contemporary art.

“Emmitt’s work examines the construct of space and degradation of experience through the lens of technology,” said Anthony Faris, Gallery Coordinator at NDSU. “The Board, Gallery and community are very excited to have Mr. Smith’s artwork as part of the NDSU Collection so that student’s can continue to enjoy this installation for years to come.”

Smith’s work currently is on display in the Memorial Union Gallery for the exhibition From the Vault. The exhibit will be on display from Nov. 8-17. A reception was held on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
