Outreach and Events

The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art takes pride in giving back to the local community and offering events and services to provide students with valuable workforce experience. Students and faculty are given the opportunity to showcase their artwork and to be inspired by professional, contemporary works through gallery programming and visiting artists/lectures.

The Department has also partnered with the Averitt Center for the Arts in Statesboro to provide students with opportunities to showcase their work in the community. Together we host student exhibitions and present the biannual All Fired Up Exhibition & Sale at the Roxie Remley Center for Fine Arts.

The Georgia Southern University Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art has Galleries in Statesboro and Savannah. Gallery Director: Jason Hoelscher

The Center for Art & Theatre is home to four galleries. The Betty Foy Sanders Georgia Artists Gallery and the Smith Callaway Banks Georgia Folk Art Gallery show two of the Department’s permanent collections. Student, alumni, visiting artist, and faculty exhibitions are shown in the University and Contemporary Galleries.

Art Workshops

World’s Largest (not so) Still Life

Starting with a ridiculously large still life, you’ll take on a series of prompts and challenges designed to unleash your imagination while you create your own one-of-a-kind work of art.

This exciting studio experience is open only to CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS who are interested in pursuing a degree in art, art history, graphic design, or art education on any Georgia Southern University campus.

Pre-registration is required. There will be no walk-ups.

Registration will open on December 1, 2023. The deadline to register is January 7, 2024 or when full.

*Scholarships: At the end of this event, two individuals will be awarded $1,000 for the 2024-2025 academic year. To receive the BFSDoArt scholarship, the student must be a current high school senior, must attend Georgia Southern University in the 2024-2025 academic year (full-time enrollment), must be entering the University as a first-term freshman or beginning freshman with dual enrollment credit, and must major in a BFSDoArt program.

Fine Arts Gallery

The Fine Arts Gallery is located in Fine Arts Hall on the Armstrong Campus. The gallery has about 10 exhibitions per academic year, including faculty and student shows, visiting artist exhibitions, and the annual Georgia U.S. 1st Congressional District Juried High School Exhibition.

The L-shaped gallery features sheetrock walls with plywood backing at 9 feet 5 inches tall (8 feet 7 inches to the bottom of lighting track fixtures), maple flooring and a dropped ceiling with low-voltage track lighting. There is approximately 1,257 square feet of floor space, 132 linear feet of wall hanging space and three 5-by-8 double-sided mobile wall systems that add 30 linear feet of wall space and 240 square feet of wall space.

The gallery is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

A Vibrant Spectrum is a senior exhibition featuring work by Zarteria Battle, Kayla Nesmith, and Bryce Winters. The show includes ceramics and fiber art by Zarteria Battle, AI mix media by Kayla Nesmith, and graphic design by Bryce Winters. A vibrant spectrum showcases a combination of a variety of art mediums and color schemes explored by the artists.

The Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition

The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art at Georgia Southern University is proud of our students and wants to reward our outstanding student artists for their hard work and creativity. The Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition is professionally juried from outside Georgia Southern University, emulating the practice of real-world art shows. The exhibition showcases the best artwork produced by students during the past year and gives students the opportunity to participate in a professional exhibition where a qualified juror selects artwork and artistic merit awards.

Eligibility

Works must have been produced between January 2021 and March 2022 and not exhibited in previous juried student exhibitions at Armstrong Gallery. To submit work, entrants must have been enrolled in a course on the Armstrong Campus (online courses included) during the 2021-2022 academic years at Georgia Southern University. All media are eligible for submission, but must be completed by date of entry; no work may be changed or altered after entering. Once accepted, no work may be removed during the show for any reason.

There is no entry fee to participate in the Student Juried Annual.

Exhibition Guidelines

ABOUT THE JUROR

Deepanjan Mukhopadhyay works in photography, video, installation, sculpture, and new media, investigating shifting meanings within post and neocolonialism while still reflecting on the very mediums of representation that he uses. Deepanjan is originally from Kolkata, India, and received his MFA in photography from the University of Georgia. Deepanjan’s work has been published in Aperture.org, Burnaway, and PDN Magazine. He has also received honors for his work from Society of Photographic Education, 2015 PDN Photo Annual, and was named one of the Atlanta Celebrates Photography 2017 Ones to Watch. Jury Process and Notification of Juror’s Decision:

The jurying process will be conducted with consideration for juror discretion and the following constraint: amount of physical space. Excessively large work or works in sets will decrease the total number of accepted works, thus they will be juried more stringently.

Your application must be completed and submitted online by the submission deadline. You may submit up to three images of artwork for review. Please note that image size and labeling are very important. Image files must be JPEG only, no larger than 1,000 pixels in height or width, and a resolution of 72 pixels per inch.

A maximum of three (3) works per student may be submitted for consideration. Title, date, size (H x W x D), and medium must be provided. All works must specify a price or be listed as Not for Sale (NFS), and an additional insurance value must also be provided.

Artist Agreement:

Artist agreement upon entry: By completing & submitting the entry form, the entrant confirms that they have read the terms and conditions and agree to participate in accordance with these. The entrant also agrees that their artwork may be photographed and used in any promotional materials now or in the future and at the discretion of the Betty Foy Sanders of Art and Georgia Southern University.

Professional presentation of artwork is critical for exhibition. The Armstrong Gallery reserves the right to refuse accepted work that is deemed unsafe, or otherwise unsuitable for handling (i.e., poorly constructed, poorly framed or environmentally hazardous).

All artwork must remain in the Gallery for the Duration of the exhibition.

Sales:

Artists exhibiting work are responsible for any works sold during the exhibition. The Armstrong Art Gallery will facilitate communication between potential buyers and the artist. The arrangement for payment to the artist and delivery to the buyer is the sole responsibility of the artist. The Armstrong Art Gallery takes no fee in the sale of work and takes no responsibility for the exchange between buyer and the artist. All artwork must remain in the Gallery for the Duration of the exhibition regardless of a sale.

Sculpture Walk

Reception: Nov. 4, 5-7 p.m. at the Business Innovation Group (BIG) (58 E. Main St., Statesboro)
During the reception, guests are invited to park downtown and take a shuttle to the beginning of the trail. Then, enjoy a stroll along the trail to see each sculpture, with the walk ending at BIG.

The Sculpture Walk is an outdoor art exhibition and online silent auction that features a collection of vibrant steel sculptures designed by students in Casey Schachner’s 3D Art & Design Foundations courses.

In this collection of works, students were challenged to use a two-dimensional square piece of steel to create a three-dimensional object. This was achieved by cutting the square into multiple facets that cannot be removed but instead folded and shaped in multiple directions creating a “sculpture in the round.” The students are studying how point, line, plane, and volume all work together to interact with their surroundings. This is further enhanced through the use of surface considerations and, in this case specifically, color.

Each steel sculpture has been powder-coated to help preserve the sculpture for years of enjoyment.

Join us on Nov. 4 from 5-7 p.m. as we kick off the Sculpture Walk at the Business Innovation Group (BIG) in Downtown Statesboro. Place a bid on your favorite piece through a virtual auction, which runs the length of the exhibition ending on Nov. 26 at 6 p.m.

Virtual Auction

The virtual auction begins on Nov. 4 and will end at 6 p.m. on Nov. 26.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Betty Foy Sanders Art Student Travel Fund. This fund helps BFSDoArt students travel for various types of educational experiences including class field trips, art study abroad programs, professional conferences, and more.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Betty Foy Sanders Art Student Travel Fund to support educational travel opportunities. Payments will be accepted through the HandBid app. Winners will receive a notification when the auction ends. Purchased sculptures may be picked up on Nov. 27 during deinstall or by appointment from Nov. 28-Dec. 2.

Alicia LaChance is a painter and multidisciplinary artist who has shown her work nationally and internationally, ranging from gallery shows to large-scale public commissions. Regardless of the medium, LaChance’s work always revolves around different ways to complicate and expand the flat, two-dimensional picture plane while exploring issues of pattern, repetition, and oblique beauty.

Andrew Kuebeck

at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio

Kuebeck works in a variety of formats ranging from functional jewelry to sculptural objects and vessels. He has extensively lectured and has taught workshops on the incorporation of photographic images into jewelry pieces, vessels, and enamel. He has exhibited regionally and nationally and has had his work appear in numerous publications including 500 Enameled Objects, Wrap, Stitch, Fold, and Rivet, and Metalsmith and Niche magazines.
